The second annual Sacred Music Study Day—co-sponsored by the Archdiocese of San Francisco, St. Patrick's Seminary, and the Catholic Institute of Sacred Music—draws together singers from all over northern California for a five-hour Catholic choral festival. 

The event features:

  • Rehearsals featuring music you can take home to your congregations: a Mass ordinary, hymns to Our Lady, approachable and beautiful choral music 
  • The opportunity to learn music we can sing together at Mass
  • Workshops offering tips on developing and teaching healthy vocal technique
  • Solemn Mass, sung by participants, celebrated by His Excellency, Salvatore J. Cordileone, Archbishop of San Francisco
  • Catechesis on the role of sacred music in the spiritual life
  • An opportunity to go to confession
  • Lunch, refreshments, and fellowship with area musicians


The event is designed especially for:

7:30 a.m.Check-in, refreshments

Check in at the front door, grab a cup of coffee, and get settled. Confessions also available during this time.


8:00 a.m.Welcome, opening talk

Discover what the Church says is the purpose of sacred music and the role that sacred music plays in the spiritual life. Learn the standards that the Church holds for music in the liturgy. Talk by Dr. Donelson-Nowicka. Confessions available during this time.


8:45 a.m.Rehearsal

Discover the 6 essential elements for a quick choral warm-up to develop musicianship and good vocal technique. Then we tackle our repertoire we will sing at Mass.


10:00 a.m.Break, refreshments


10:20 a.m.Rehearsal

Learn some tips for building in exercises to develop sight-reading, all while still getting in all the practice you need for music at upcoming Masses.


11:30 a.m.Move to chapel

Final preparation for Mass


11:45 a.m.Short break


12:00 p.m.Mass with Archbishop Cordileone


1:00 p.m.Lunch, including optional working lunch session on conducting for directors

Let's eat! All attendees may join us for lunch.

At 1:30 p.m., music directors may join Dr. Donelson-Nowicka on one end of the refectory for a working session as she teaches the basics of directing Gregorian chant. This optional working session is designed for parish and school music directors. This working session will wrap up by 2:30 p.m.

The event will be held in-person at St. Patrick's Seminary (320 Middlefield Rd., Menlo Park, CA).

Ample on-site parking is available.

The registration fee includes materials, instruction, refreshments, and lunch. 

Those wishing to stay overnight in the area will find the best prices for accommodations in nearby Redwood City. 

The nearest Caltrain station is the Menlo Park Station, located 1.3 miles from the Seminary.
